Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 1. Why does GECKO do its work for free? GECKO was formed to address the remarkable need for free environmental education and change assistance. GECKO exists because positive environmental changes need to happen & many organizations want to become greener but they often lack the money, time, or expertise to implement change on their own. If we can help you find funding for a project or if you have a budget already, we do ask that you remember that GECKO is dependent on charitable support. 2. If you could give only one piece of advice to an owner of a medium sized business, what would it be? Hire a low level management employee called an “Energy and Resource Manager”. A qualified and empowered person in that position could save a 150 person company well over $1000 per employee per year in costs. 3. Why does GECKO post its' Methodology and EPICS research online? Aren't you afraid that others will just copy it? No, we want people to copy it. GECKO measures its' success exclusively on the principle of its' mission to help companies become better stewards of the environment. If by copying our methodology or our research - others encourage positive environmental changes to take place - then as an organization we are more effective. We do however require that when our material is copied that www.corporatekindness.org is sited as the source. 4. The information in the EPICS document is great, but is it all right? Unfortunately no one is perfect. GECKOs' staff is constantly researching the EPICS recommendations. In making their decisions on what to recommend - they look for Best Available Technology (BAT) and a concept we have coined Best Available Morality (BAM). Our staff makes the best calls we can based on the information we can dig up. Are we always right? No. Do we keep an open mind to new suggestions? Yes. 5. I noticed on the About us page that GECKO is a 501(C)3 non-profit. What does this mean? It means that any contributions made to GECKO are tax deductible for Federal tax purposes. 6. What is post consumer fiber? Recovered fiber that has been successfully used by a consumer for its intended purpose, has been successfully recovered through a waste collection or recycling program, and is once again being utilized as material used in making a new product. 7. What does biodegradable mean? Capable of being decomposed by biological agents like bacteria. Materials are usually deemed biodegradable if they break down to at least 90% H2O, CO2, and biomass within 6 months. Although some materials may take years to biodegrade. Biodegradability does not necessarily mean environmentally friendly. 8. Why do you differentiate between Return On Investment 'ROI' measures and non-ROI related measures in the EPICS document? Shouldn't you be presenting all of the information as though it had equal value? We differentiate between ROI measures and non-ROI related measures because businesses usually do. The most sure fire way to encourage environmental business practice change at companies with no prior tendency to evaluate their environmental practices is: show them the money. Once a number of money saving changes get implemented, it becomes easier to see the value of environmental change & to cost justify those measures that don't positively impact the bottom line.
